About the STEAM Lab
Mrs. Allard teaches an enrichment class primarily in science, but also incorporates technology and engineering. This year we will work in a little bit of art as well. Each class at Vista Grande comes to her room for one hour a week. In her classroom, students will experience hands-on STEAM-focused and Makerspace activities. Students are expected to work in teams or partners a good deal of the time in the Lab, and a lot of work is towards building 21st Century skills. Science notebooking and NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) practice are also part of the Lab experience. Sometimes work is provided from Mrs. Allard to classroom teachers for use in student assessment, but most of the experience is focused on building a growth mindset in our students. “Failure” is seen as a path to success.
Elementary Science Field Day
In addition to teaching in the STEAM Lab during the week, Mrs. Allard also sponsors the Science Field Day team for 4th and 5th graders, which is a science competition. For Science Field Day (SFD), students have to apply and be selected to participate, as there are only a certain number of spots available. This is a county-sponsored event and is held on a Saturday in May every year. Students generally compete in 2 events and spend time practicing beforehand. Practice sessions are held periodically on minimum days after school, and students meetings during school hours. While practice sessions are held during the year, Mrs. Allard is there for guidance and to offer a place to practice to partners, but students are expected to be the ones preparing themselves for their event(s).

STEAM Lab Funding
Did you know that the district does not fund any of the supplies for the STEAM Lab beyond paper, pencils, erasers, and notebooks? The Lab relies heavily on funds from the parent Foundation, or donations through DonorsChoose.org, Amazon Wish Lists, Adopt-a-Classroom, or other funding sources. There are also often items that could be used that you may already have at home. Scroll down to see how you can help!
